Case Study - DeSoto High School

DeSoto High School is a public school in DeSoto, Texas, United States. It is part of the DeSoto Independent School District, and has an enrollment of approximately 2,000 students. According to the Texas Tribune Public School Explorer, the school is predominately African American (82.8%), with 52.1% of students described as "at risk." In aggregate, students perform well below the state average in passing TAKS scores. Fewer than half of students are prepared for college in both English Language Arts and Math.

More Than A Teacher offered a pilot prep program for students chosen by the school. This prep program consisted of 9 two-hour prep classes with a single instructor. Classes were held over a 5 week period. Students were also offered a practice test and test review.

Prior to the class, 40% of the students met a college readiness benchmark of 990. After the class, 70% of students had achieved this benchmark. Student and administrator feedback on the class was very favorable, and DeSoto High School now uses More Than A Teacher for its summer test prep program.

Course Catalog

More Than a Teacher (MTAT) offers a wide variety of test preparation options for students looking to prepare for the PSAT, SAT, and ACT. Below is a sample of the different types of classes and tutoring we have available, but we are always willing to create customized programs for individual schools or districts. All classes and tutoring listed are taught by MTAT instructors.

Traditional Classes

Our Traditional Classes are our most popular option and are used by the majority of our students. The PSAT/SAT course is comprised of approximately 18 hours of classroom instruction, and the ACT course is approximately 12 hours. Both courses include Saturday practice tests that mirror the actual testing environment and are followed by tutorials that can be used to makeup missed classes or review practice test results. Classes vary in length but will typically range from one to two hours per session (depending on the school and particulars of the class) and start anywhere from one to two months in advance of a test.

Combined Classes

Combined Classes are a less expensive way to prepare students for both the SAT and ACT. Students register for both courses at once and are given a discount. Combined Classes are most beneficial for students who plan on preparing for both tests. Class dates and times are the same as for traditional classes.

Accelerated Classes (shortened version of regular class)

For schools and students who don’t have time to commit to a full length course, MTAT offers Accelerated Classes. These classes can be used as a stand-along program or to augment other SAT/ACT preparation. Accelerated classes include 10 hours of instruction for the PSAT/SAT, or 8 hours of instruction for the ACT. Both courses include a Saturday practice test and review in addition to the classroom instruction.

Condensed Classes (‘Boot Camp’)

Condensed Classes are normally composed of four hours of instruction for either the PSAT/SAT or ACT and a practice test/review. These classes are good for students who need to know the basics about a test in addition to getting some general test taking knowledge such as when to guess, how to identify problem types, and time management.

Free Practice Tests

MTAT offers free diagnostic practice tests on Saturdays throughout the school year and during the summer. Run on site, practice tests can be used as fundraisers for clubs (NHS, Orchestra, etc) or just as a way to help expose students to the PSAT/SAT or ACT. MTAT provides an instructor to help coordinate, score, and review the test, while the school provides enough proctors to monitor the proceedings and help manage any issues that may arise during the test.
