Thinking about the ISEE?

The ISEE is a test many private schools require for admissions. It is most often taken by 8th grade students applying to private high schools (ie the Upper Level ISEE) but is also given to students applying to private schools at lower grade levels.

Many schools in the DFW area trust More Than a Teacher to provide their on-campus ISEE prep. For students who do not attend a school that partners with More Than a Teacher, or for students who would prefer smaller class sizes or one-on-one instruction, More Than a Teacher also offers private ISEE classes and tutoring. Private ISEE classes are typically composed of 8 hour-long sessions and a practice test, whereas hourly private tutoring is normally between 2 and 6 sessions depending on the needs of the student. When should my student take the test?

     Most students take the ISEE during the "Winter" testing window, which lasts from December to March. Within that window, the vast majority of students take the test in January.

When should ISEE tutoring start?

     We typically recommend that students start prepping in early November for a January ISEE test date. This is because a large chunk of what students are expected to know on the ISEE (in particular on the Math sections) is taught in school during the Fall semester. Starting in November means that students have maximized the amount they will learn in school while still allowing enough time to reinforce trouble areas or concepts. Teaching students material before they learn it in school typically takes significantly longer and is not recommended.

What are the sections on the ISEE?

     There are four scored sections of the ISEE along with a unscored Essay component. The four scored sections are:

          Verbal Reasoning - This section tests a student's vocab knowledge and verbal ability.

          Quantitative Reasoning - This section tests a student's ability to solve math problems.

          Reading Comprehension - This section tests a student's reading ability.

          Mathematics Achievement - This section tests how far a student has progressed in math.

          Essay (unscored) - This section will give a student an open-ended question (ie "if you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?").
